This week, we raise the question: What is determination? For the Olympic athletes, it starts with focus and drive to achieve their goals desired. Which brings the question back to you and me. Do we have the determination to excel, to succeed as we desire for our faith, for our marriage, for our family, for our career? If not, now is the time to step up (we can!). |

Today (June 19th, 2016) is a special day and yes I know, some kids would respond to the above with "better" but in other cases, many dads have done just about all the right things. For all dads out there (and in my extended family: Zach, Alex, JJ, Ronnie, Tyler, Anthony, AJ, Kip, Aaron, CJ, Seth and Greg),- Happy Father's Day 2016! For all the young fathers or fathers-to-be . . . our "Who Needs a Dad" blog (further below) was a good starting point consideration and the following would be good 'things' to pursue for your kids as they grow up.
And remember; "As a father has compassion on his children, so does the LORD have compassion on those who fear Him." Psalm 103:13
Last week we kicked off our series on Going for the Gold (GftG) as a way for us to think about the upcoming Summer Olympics and all those athletes from across the world as they pursue excellence in their sport.
Third, as you ponder and pursue confidence, don't forget to add some perspective. Having a foundation of faith is a great way to put our life on track and in giving us confidence to pursue what is need and is good!
This week after seeing the news, I am saddened to hear of various men doing violence or others aspects of abuse against girls, women. This is unacceptable but how can this be addressed? We need more role models and their actions to inspire all. One set of people - consider the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio. Why? As the athletes from around the world now complete their readiness actions for this competition, it made me wonder; what about us - what does the world need? They show a commitment to self-sacrifice in order to achieve their goals. All men need to step up and Ted Wengstrom came up with a great list for us to leverage. THE WORLD NEEDS PEOPLE . . . Who cannot be bought; Whose word is their bond; Who can say "no" with emphasis, although the rest of the world says "yes"; Who are not ashamed or afraid to stand for the truth when it appears unpopular; Who do not believe that shrewdness, cunning and hardheadedness are the best qualities to succeed; Who are true to their friends through good report and evil report, in adversity as well as prosperity; Who will not say they will do it "because everybody else does it"; Whose ambitions are not confined to their own selfish desires; Who will be honest in small things as in great things; Who will not loose their individuality in a crowd; Who will make no compromise with wrong; Who do not hesitate to take chances; Who are larger than their vocations; Who possess opinions and a will; Who put character above wealth.
And "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." Philippians 4:8
With June now unfolding and Father's Day soon to be here - I thought I'd share the following for some 'pondering and pursuing' where desired (if the following helps you - great, but if you are on track - then maybe the following is some good information that you may want to share with others). For example:
Now I can't remember who wrote those words on what a son and daughter needs in a dad but I like them. And if you are like me (an older dad), then you may think - my Dad tried to do the best that he could and I tried to do better. I can see that my kids are doing better than me (that is my grand-daughter Addy raising money for the VFW and it just puts a huge smile on my face!). So how about you - are your 'dad efforts' on track?
Know that . . . all sons and daughters need their dads to help them grow - regardless of our age, let us dads keep trying to be the best dads that we can be as our years continue to unfold. And don't forget: "Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart". -Col. 3:21 |
